The Watzmann is the third-highest mountain in Germany at 2,713 metres, dominating the skyline above Berchtesgaden and the village of Ramsau. Its east face, a vertical rock wall over 1,800 metres high, is one of the most demanding and celebrated routes in the Eastern Alps. Across the valley, views of the wall reflected in the Hintersee lake define one of the classic Bavarian alpine compositions.
