Germany's only alpine national park occupies the south-eastern corner of Bavaria on the Austrian border, protecting a high-mountain landscape dominated by the Watzmann and Hochkalter massifs. Glaciers, cirque lakes, ancient spruce-fir forests, and subalpine meadows provide habitat for ibex, golden eagles, and chamois. Trails ascend from the valley town of Berchtesgaden to remote huts at elevations above 2,000 metres.
