Standing at the confluence of two small tributaries of the Moselle, Burg Eltz is one of the most intact medieval family castles in the Rhineland, having never been destroyed or heavily modified since its construction between the 12th and 16th centuries. The cluster of towers and rooflines visible from the valley path below constitutes one of Germany's most celebrated castle silhouettes. The castle remains in the hands of the same family that originally built it.
