The Vipava Valley is a broad agricultural depression in western Slovenia sheltered by the Nanos plateau above and the Karst edge to the south, subject to the Bora wind that sweeps down from the plateau with considerable force. The valley floor is planted with vineyards and orchards producing wine varieties indigenous to the region, and a series of small market towns with Renaissance and Baroque architecture line the valley road. The contrast between the white limestone escarpments above and the green valley below is visually striking particularly in autumn.
