Stari Bar is the ruined old town of Bar, a large fortified settlement on an inland hill that was inhabited from antiquity until an Austrian bombardment and subsequent earthquake left much of it in ruins in the late nineteenth century. The walled complex contains the remains of a cathedral, aqueduct, mosques, churches, and Ottoman baths spread across several hectares of gradually excavated terrain. An ancient olive tree on the outskirts of the site, estimated at over 2,000 years of age, is one of the oldest in Europe.
