Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost coastal town, situated near the Albanian border and bearing a distinctly different cultural character than the rest of the Montenegrin coast, shaped by a long Ottoman and later Albanian Muslim presence. The old town perches on a coastal cliff above the sea and retains Ottoman-era architecture and an atmospheric ruined bazaar quarter. Velika Plaža, stretching 13 kilometres south of the town, is the longest natural sand beach on the eastern Adriatic.
