Few places on Earth expose the planet's mantle at the surface. On Newfoundland's west coast, Gros Morne lays bare deep ocean crust and mantle rock — decisive evidence for the theory of continental drift — amid scenery carved by ice: fjords, glacial valleys, sheer cliffs, waterfalls, pristine lakes and an alpine plateau. UNESCO inscribed the national park in 1987 for both its geology and its grandeur.
