Lovćen National Park protects the dark mountain massif directly behind Kotor, its name thought to derive from the Slavic word for black, reflecting the appearance of its dense forests from the sea below. The highest peak, Jezerski Vrh at 1,657 metres, is crowned by the mausoleum of the Montenegrin ruler and poet Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, reached by 461 steps cut into the mountain. The view from the mausoleum terrace encompasses the Bay of Kotor, the Adriatic, and on clear days the coast of Albania.
