The Bay of Kotor is a deeply indented series of connected inlets carved by river action and subsequently flooded, creating what is often described as the southernmost fjord in Europe, though it is geologically a submerged river canyon. The steep limestone mountains of Orjen and Lovćen rise almost vertically from the water's edge, giving the bay a dramatic enclosed quality unlike any other on the Adriatic coast. Fortified medieval towns and Venetian-era churches line the shoreline at the base of the cliffs.
