Piran is a Venetian-era port town on Slovenia's short Adriatic coastline, its medieval townscape of narrow streets and Gothic architecture virtually unchanged from the period of Venetian rule. The pentagonal Tartini Square opens to the sea at one end and is ringed by coloured facades typical of northern Adriatic urbanism. The Church of St. George on the hilltop and its campanile, modelled on the Campanile of San Marco in Venice, provide the definitive view over the terracotta rooftops and the Gulf of Trieste.
