The Soča River rises near Triglav and flows south through a deep limestone gorge before crossing into Italy, its colour an intense emerald-green that results from dissolved calcium carbonate and glacial silt. The river valley is flanked by forested slopes and passes through small settlements that bear the scars of First World War battles fought along the Isonzo Front. The Great Soča Gorge near Trenta narrows to a slot canyon passable only via suspended walkways.
