The Troodos Mountains form the central massif of Cyprus, rising to 1,952 metres at Mount Olympos, and contain a cluster of Byzantine painted churches whose frescoes represent a continuous tradition from the eleventh to the sixteenth century listed collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain villages offer stone-built architecture, traditional crafts, and a climate several degrees cooler than the coast. In winter the upper slopes receive sufficient snowfall to support a small ski facility on Mount Olympos.
