Kyrenia, known in Turkish as Girne, is a harbour town on the northern coast of Cyprus under Turkish Cypriot administration, centred on one of the best-preserved small Crusader and Venetian harbours in the eastern Mediterranean. The circular harbour basin is enclosed by the massive Kyrenia Castle, whose interior contains the Shipwreck Museum housing a fourth-century BCE merchant vessel recovered from the seabed — one of the oldest ships found in the Mediterranean. The Saint Hilarion Castle in the Kyrenia Range above the city offers views across to the Turkish coast.
