Skyros is the southernmost and largest of the Northern Sporades, divided geographically between a forested north and a bare, rocky south resembling an Aegean landscape. The Chora climbs a steep conical hill in a distinctly Cycladic-influenced style, more suggestive of the southern islands than its Sporades neighbours. The island is home to the Skyrian horse, one of the world's smallest horse breeds and a rare ancient strain, and maintains a tradition of carnival with distinctive masked figures known as the Geros and the Korela.
