Lesbos is the third largest Greek island, located in the northeastern Aegean close to the Turkish coast, with an economy historically centred on olive oil production — around eleven million trees cover much of the island's terrain. The petrified forest in the island's west, where ancient tree trunks have been mineralised in volcanic ash over 20 million years, is a UNESCO geopark. The port capital Mytilini contains a Byzantine fortress and the archaeological museum, while the medieval village of Molyvos in the north is dominated by a Genoese castle above a harbour.
