The Pelion Peninsula extends into the Aegean Sea south of Volos, a mountainous finger of land covered in dense deciduous forest of chestnut, oak, and beech trees unusual in the Greek landscape. Traditional villages of slate-roofed stone tower houses with overhanging upper storeys occupy shaded hillside terraces, accessed by old stone-paved kalderimi paths between them. The eastern coast drops to a sequence of beaches including Mylopotamos, while the Pagasetic Gulf side is calmer and favoured for sailing.
