Skopelos is a forested island in the Northern Sporades, densely covered with pine, olive, and plum trees, that became internationally familiar as a filming location for the 2008 film Mamma Mia. The island's capital Chora climbs a steep hill above the port in a cascade of whitewashed houses with blue, grey, and red slate roofs, punctuated by over a hundred small churches. The coastal chapel of Agios Ioannis at Kastri perches on a rocky pinnacle above the sea and requires climbing a steep rock-cut stairway to reach.
