Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town on the Gulf of Mirabello in northeastern Crete, built around a small circular lake — Lake Voulismeni — connected to the sea by a narrow channel dug in the nineteenth century. The lakeside promenade and the adjacent harbour create a compact waterfront scene unusual in the Aegean context, and the surrounding hillsides offer views across the deep blue gulf to mountains beyond. The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos holds important Minoan finds from sites across the Lasithi region.
