Milos is a volcanic island in the southwestern Cyclades, best known as the findspot of the Venus de Milo sculpture now in the Louvre, and for a coastline of extraordinary geological variety including pumice formations, lunar sea-cave clusters, and coloured rock faces. The village of Klima preserves a cluster of syrmata — traditional boathouses with living quarters above, painted in vivid primary colours and built at the water's edge on the old harbour. The Sarakiniko rock formation at the north of the island, bleached white by volcanic activity, is among the most photographed landscapes in the Cyclades.
