Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades, with a fertile interior of marble quarries, Byzantine tower houses, and villages of unusual agricultural richness compared to its more arid neighbours. At the entrance to Naxos Town harbour stands the Portara, a massive marble doorway that is all that remains of an unfinished sixth-century BCE Temple of Apollo, forming an instantly recognisable silhouette at sunset. The island's Kouros statues — unfinished archaic marble figures left in their quarries — are among the earliest large-scale Greek sculptures.
