Phaistos is the second largest Minoan palatial complex on Crete, situated on a low hill in the fertile Messara Plain with views toward the Asterousia Mountains and the Libyan Sea. The site preserves the ruins of two successive palace buildings, the later one constructed around 1700 BCE following destruction of the first, with a grand ceremonial staircase as its most imposing surviving feature. The Phaistos Disc, an undeciphered clay tablet with stamped symbols found here, is displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
