Preveli is a beach on the southern coast of Crete at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where a palm-lined river flows through a delta and enters the Libyan Sea. The grove of Cretan date palms along the riverbanks creates an incongruous tropical landscape against the bare limestone gorge walls. The monastery of Moni Preveli stands on a clifftop above the coast and played a notable role sheltering Allied troops during the Second World War occupation.
