Chania is a port city on the northwestern coast of Crete with a well-preserved Venetian inner harbour ringed by arched stone warehouses converted to restaurants and hotels. The lighthouse at the harbour entrance dates to the Venetian period and was later modified under Egyptian administration in the nineteenth century. The narrow lanes of the old town mix Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek architectural elements, with a covered market hall in a cruciform plan at its edge.
