Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete, built around a Venetian-era harbour defended by the sixteenth-century Koules fortress. The city centre retains substantial sections of Venetian walls and features the Morosini Fountain on Lions Square, a focal point of the historic core. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum holds one of the world's most significant collections of Minoan art and artefacts, including the famous Phaistos Disc and original palace frescoes.
