The Vikos Gorge in the Pindus Mountains of northwestern Greece is listed among the world's deepest gorges relative to its width, with walls descending nearly 1,000 metres from rim to river in places. The Voidomatis River runs along the gorge floor through beech and fir forest within the Vikos-Aoos National Park. Traditional stone-built villages of the Zagori region, including Monodendri and Papingo, sit at the canyon rim and serve as starting points for trekking routes.
