The Three Cities — Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (L-Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla) — occupy three peninsulas projecting into the Grand Harbour opposite Valletta and predate the Knights' capital as Malta's main fortified settlements. Vittoriosa is the most visited, containing the original Palace of the Grand Masters before the Knights built Valletta, the Inquisitor's Palace, and the Fort St Angelo dominating the creek. The view from Senglea's Vedette watchtower across to Valletta's baroque skyline at golden hour is one of the most refined vistas in the Mediterranean.
