Vulcano, the southernmost inhabited Aeolian Island, takes its name from the Roman god of fire and has given its name to the geological phenomenon of volcanic eruption. The Gran Cratere summit trail climbs through sulfurous fumaroles to a caldera rim with views across the entire Aeolian archipelago. At the base, the thermal mud pools near Porto di Levante and the black sand beach at Porto Ponente are popular for their supposed mineral properties.
