The largest of the Aeolian Islands, Lipari is built around a fortified citadel containing a Norman cathedral and an archaeological museum holding one of the most important prehistoric Mediterranean collections in the world. The white pumice-stone terraces at Campobianco on the island's north coast, a legacy of the island's volcanic geology, spill toward the sea in a lunar landscape. Boat trips from the island connect to all the other Aeolian islands within a few hours.
