One of the earliest settled islands in the Venetian lagoon and once its most populous, Torcello is now almost entirely depopulated, with a few hundred residents and two remarkable churches in a marshy landscape. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639 AD and rebuilt in the eleventh century, contains the largest and finest Byzantine mosaic ensemble in northern Italy, including a monumental Last Judgement on the western wall. The isolation amplifies the atmosphere.
