Situated in the northern Venetian lagoon, Burano is a fishing island whose houses are painted in intensely saturated blocks of colour—cobalt, scarlet, lemon, and emerald—a tradition that helped fishermen locate their homes through fog. The island is also a centre for needle lacemaking, documented in the Museo del Merletto. The main canal-side street and the leaning campanile of San Martino are the canonical photographic subjects.
