Corvo is the smallest and northernmost island in the Azores with a population of fewer than 500 residents, and almost its entire land area consists of the interior of a large volcanic caldera measuring roughly 3.7 kilometres in diameter with two lakes at its floor. The caldera, known as the Caldeirão, is accessible by a steep trail from the single village of Vila do Corvo and offers an extraordinary view of the green-floored crater with its mossy islets reflected in the lake water. The island's extreme remoteness and small scale provide an experience of Azorean island life with essentially no tourism infrastructure.
