The Caldeira of Faial is a large volcanic crater at the centre of the island measuring approximately 2 kilometres in diameter and 400 metres deep, surrounded by a caldera rim at roughly 1,000 metres elevation. A circular trail follows the entire rim through a protected natural reserve of endemic Azorean vegetation including juniper and heather woodland. The interior of the caldera is closed to visitors, preserving the crater floor as an undisturbed environment.
