Lagoa do Fogo, meaning Lake of Fire, occupies a crater in the central volcanic massif of São Miguel at approximately 590 metres elevation and is the island's highest lake. The crater lake is surrounded by uninhabited ridges clad in tree heather and ferns, protected within a nature reserve that restricts development. The trail descent from the rim to the lake shore crosses volcanic ash slopes and reveals the lake's intensely blue water and black sand beach at the water's edge.
