Furnas is a volcanic caldeira settlement in eastern São Miguel, characterised by actively bubbling fumaroles and hot springs distributed throughout the village and around the shore of Lagoa das Furnas. A pot of the traditional slow-cooked stew known as cozido das Furnas is buried in the geothermal soil at the lakeside and cooked by volcanic heat, a practice that has become both a culinary tradition and a visitor attraction. Terra Nostra Garden, established in the 18th century and expanded over two centuries, contains a thermal swimming pool fed by naturally hot iron-rich water.
