Porto Moniz is a village at the northwestern tip of Madeira where basalt lava flows that reached the sea millennia ago created a series of natural rock pools now used as seawater swimming pools. The rugged volcanic coastline is battered by Atlantic swells from the northwest, creating dramatic wave action on the outer rocks while the enclosed pools remain swimmable. The village is the terminus of the coastal road and the starting point for the northern coast levada trails.
