The Caldeirão Verde levada trail follows an irrigation channel cut into the northern escarpment of Madeira, passing through dense laurisilva forest and four tunnels before reaching a 100-metre waterfall falling into a circular pool at the canyon head. The path traverses the edge of the Queimadas forest park and the Madeira Natural Park, and the cloud forest environment is notably atmospheric, with mosses and ferns covering the cliff faces alongside the channel. The combination of tunnel passages, vertical cliffs, and the waterfall terminus makes it one of the island's most distinctive walking routes.
