Formentera is the smallest and southernmost of the main Balearic Islands, accessible only by ferry from Ibiza and characterised by flat terrain, saltpans, and beaches of pale sand in exceptionally clear water. The lack of industry and the shallow offshore Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows — a UNESCO-listed habitat — keep the water transparency unusually high, producing colours that resemble tropical destinations. The island's relatively limited tourism infrastructure and car-free policy on certain roads give it a quieter character than neighbouring Ibiza.
