Valle Gran Rey is a deep ravine on the western coast of La Gomera that opens onto the sea at a settlement combining a small fishing harbour, black-sand beaches, and terraced palm groves climbing the valley walls. The cliffs flanking the valley rise steeply to several hundred metres and are striated with layers of volcanic material in contrasting colours. The valley attracted a significant community of travellers and alternative lifestyle residents in the 1970s who were drawn by its remoteness, a character it has partly retained.
