Perched at 479 metres on the northern cliff of Lanzarote, Mirador del Río was designed by César Manrique to blend organically into the volcanic cliff face, with two glazed oval windows framing the view across the El Río strait to La Graciosa island below. The viewpoint was originally a military lookout post, and Manrique's 1974 intervention created a subterranean visitors' space almost invisible from the exterior. The view encompasses La Graciosa's sandy plain, the smaller islets beyond, and the deep blue channel separating them from Lanzarote.

Where next?
