The Alentejo region of south-central Portugal is a vast agricultural plateau of cork oak woodlands (montado), wheat plains, and ancient hilltop towns that extends from the Tagus south to the Algarve. It produces the majority of the world's cork and is home to some of Portugal's most revered red wines. The slow pace of life, unspoiled landscapes of golden cereals, and whitewashed villages with blue-trim houses define a travel experience distinct from the coastal resorts.
