Sintra lies on the wooded slopes of the Serra de Sintra 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, its forested ridge concealing an extraordinary concentration of Romantic palaces, Moorish ruins, and exotic gardens built by 19th-century Portuguese royalty and wealthy aristocrats. The town centre (UNESCO World Heritage) clusters around the National Palace with its distinctive twin conical chimneys. The forest microclimate, one of the most humid in Portugal, sustains lush semi-tropical vegetation year-round.
