Piodão is an isolated schist village deep in the Serra do Açor in Coimbra district, its dark-grey stone houses with contrasting blue-painted window frames stacked on a steep valley slope in one of the most visually striking vernacular streetscapes in Portugal. The village is accessible by a twisting mountain road and retains few permanent residents, functioning partly as a heritage preservation project. The single church with bright-yellow facade provides the only colour accent against the dark stone.
