Serra da Arrábida rises steeply from the Setúbal Peninsula south of Lisbon, its southern flank dropping directly into the Atlantic in a series of sheltered turquoise coves. The limestone ridge shelters Mediterranean scrubland and rare plant communities protected by the natural park. Beaches such as Portinho da Arrábida and Galapinhos are renowned for exceptional water clarity, making them among the best swimming spots in mainland Portugal.
