Serra da Estrela is mainland Portugal's highest mountain range, reaching 1,993 metres at Torre, and the only place in the country with regular winter snowfall sufficient for skiing. The natural park protects glacially carved valleys (covas), granite moorland, and the headwaters of the Mondego and Zêzere rivers. The region produces the celebrated Queijo da Serra (Serra da Estrela cheese) and is the source of Portugal's most recognisable shepherd dog breed.
