Nazaré is a fishing town and beach resort on the Estremadura coast of central Portugal, set below a promontory known as Sítio that is reached by a historic funicular. The North Beach at Praia do Norte, protected by a deep underwater canyon that amplifies Atlantic swell, regularly produces the largest surfable waves ever recorded — exceeding 30 metres. The Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo lighthouse at Sítio is the prime vantage point for photographing these extreme waves in winter.
