Óbidos is a walled medieval town in the Oeste region of central Portugal, its complete circuit of battlemented walls enclosing a whitewashed village of cobbled lanes decorated with bougainvillea and azulejo-tiled facades. The town was traditionally gifted by Portuguese kings to their queens as a wedding present, giving it the title 'wedding gift town.' The castle at the north end of the walls has been converted into a pousada (historic hotel).
