Portugal's only national park spans the granite mountain ranges of the northwest Minho region near the Spanish border, covering river valleys, oak forest, and moorland at altitudes up to 1,545 metres. The park is home to wolves, golden eagles, and wild Garrano ponies that graze the high plateaux. Waterfalls, clear rivers for swimming, and Iron Age hillforts (castros) make it one of the most ecologically and historically rich protected areas in Iberia.
