The southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Cabo de São Vicente in the Algarve drops sheer cliffs of dark schist into the Atlantic on two sides. In antiquity it was considered the end of the inhabited world; today its lighthouse, one of the most powerful on the European Atlantic coast, stands on the promontory. The cape is a noted vantage point for seabird and cetacean migration, particularly in spring and autumn.
