The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost region, extending 155 kilometres of Atlantic coastline from the Spanish border to Cabo de São Vicente. The western section around Sagres and Lagos is characterised by dramatic sea cliffs and pounding surf; the eastern sotavento coast transitions to long barrier-island beaches and tidal inlets. The region receives more annual sunshine than almost anywhere else in Western Europe.
