At the southern tip of Gran Canaria, the Maspalomas dunes form a protected nature reserve of wind-sculpted sand fields covering approximately 400 hectares, extending to a lagoon and a palm grove. The dunes are fed by Saharan sand carried by the trade winds and shift gradually over time. The scale and golden colour of the dunes are most striking photographed at sunset from the lighthouse promontory nearby.
